Teenager and young people could spend a lot of time on their computer or laptop. Moreover, the booming of social networking sites and blogs attracts more and more people to spend their time with their computer.
Unfortunately, beyond the power of computer, there are some threats to computer user. I’m not talking about viruses, spams, malware, or other security threats, but I’m talking about serious injuries that you can get if you are not using your computer correctly. And yes, I’m deadly serious. Some of these injuries even should be handled using medical treatment.
Here are some of the most notable injuries related to computer usages.
Repetitive Strain Injuries
Repetitive strain injuries (RSI) is a term to define kinds of injury on tendon, muscle, and nervous system, mostly caused by repetitive tasks. On computer users, RSI can be caused by doing repetitive tasks such as typing on keyboard or clicking mouse.
RSI also related to Work Related Upper Limb Disorder (WRULD) because it can create injuries in upper part of the body such as neck, shoulder, arm, and wrists. RSI could also happen if we do something in non ergonomic position for a long period of time.
The symptoms of RSI consists of excruciating pains in the arm, back, shoulders, wrists and become worse along with the activities. The pain could cause numb, feeling cold, and weakness on the limb. Sometimes when it get worse, the patient unconsciously avoid the use of injured limbs.
The early treatment for RSI is usually by taking a rest right after we feel the pain. Although, if the pain lasted for long period of time, RSI should be handled by surgery. For prevention, we could switch to more ergonomic workspace, take more attention on our body position when we work with the computer. One thing that important about RSI prevention is by taking a short rest after some periods of time.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
According to Infinn, carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by irritation and compression of the median nerve at the wrist. The nerve in our wrist passed through small tunnel and deliver sensation. Compression in our wrist could compress the nerve and created pain, numbness, and tingling. Most of the cases related to computer usage is caused by typing.
The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome is pain and numbness in wrist and fingers. The pain is so intense that could make us awake from our sleep. The treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome is by surgery to release the carpal tunnel. Like RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome could also be prevented by using ergonomic equipment, take a rest regularly, and using different keyboard layout or keyboard alternatives.
People who use computer for a long period of time usually experienced eye strain. Eye strain could happen if we overuse our eye muscles. Eye strain could cause headaches, blurred vision, migraines, and even glaucoma. The common causes for eye strain are inadequate lighting, bad monitors, and excessive use of computers. We could prevent eye strain by using eye lubricants, change to LCD monitors, use computer glasses, and also take a short rest by looking outside the monitor for a moment. There are also some simple eye exercises that we can do in short period of time.
From those three described above, we can take some conclusions to prevent computer injuries. First, we should take a rest regularly while working with computer. Second, we should take proper attention to our body positions while working with computer, by using ergonomic equipments. So, from here on, be careful with your computer.
